Going Green to Help United Way Earn Some Green

Going Green to Help Charity Earn Some Green

The cold temperatures and wet weather did not stop the more than 400 community volunteers from collecting and delivering more than 800 pounds of recyclable aluminum and 7300lbs of mixed materials to three locations as part of the Flagler & Volusia County Recycles project on Saturday Feb. 27th.

“It was cold and rainy but the project leaders were into it and our family truly witnessed the impact of giving back and being involved. We are now a recycling family,” said Anthony Pfleger of Palm Coast.

This project was made possible thanks to a partnership between GEL Recycling, Flagler County Solid Waste Division, Volusia County, Disney, the HandsOn Network and your United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. GEL Recycling also donated a total of $810.64 to the United Way thanks to a match based on the weight of the recyclables collected.

"Everybody that volunteered was wonderful," said Laura Raftery of GEL Recycling.

“This was the first time we recycled. Thank you for the experience!” exclaimed the Bradley Family on their way out of the Orange City location.

With the help of community partnerships and donations, including those from special events like these, the United Way and its 40 partner agencies are improving lives, tackling key issues facing our area, and making a lasting impact. Together, we can create a better tomorrow for all our neighbors. If we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all -- that's what it means to Live United.
